What is GDPR?
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) – Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 – governs the protection of natural persons against the processing of personal data and the free movement of such data. It also repeals Directive 95/46/EC, establishing the European Union’s (EU) new regulatory framework for the terms and conditions for processing personal data, aimed at safeguarding the rights and freedoms of individuals. With Law 4624/2019 (Official Gazette A' 137/2019), the legislative framework regulating the structure and operation of the Hellenic Data Protection Authority was replaced, measures for the implementation of the GDPR were adopted, and Directive (EU) 2016/680 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of individuals regarding the processing of personal data by competent authorities for the purposes of prevention, investigation, detection, or prosecution of criminal offenses or the enforcement of criminal penalties and the free movement of such data, was transposed into national law, repealing Council Framework Decision 2008/977/JHA.
